Siendo grandes fans de Audiojack no pudimos dejar ir la oportunidad de aprovechar el momento y aventarles unas cuantas preguntas que traemos en mente desde la primera vez que escuchamos la canción "Robot" hasta la fecha, y para nuestra suerte Rick y Jamie resultaron ser super buena onda y en cuestion de un dia decidieron en acceder y responder todas nuestras dudas de la manera más amena (y divertida!) posible.
Primero que nada, cómo empezaron este proyecto?

Un día nos sentamos en el parque a pensar como podríamos "hacerla" como DJs y teníamos 3 opciones: tener una noche exitosa en un club, una disquera o un buen conjunto de producción musical. Como ambos jugueteábamos con la música desde pequenos decidimos que esa era la mejor opción y empezamos a trabajar aprendiendo con software de producción musical.

Lástima que no pudieron "hacerla" en ninguna de las 3.. (broma!) Que buenísima decisión tomaron, y cómo describen sus producciones?

Tratamos de resaltar de los demás y no dejarnos atrapar por modas o tendencias; esto lo hacemos al incluir sonidos y efectos inusuales. Los tracks siempre tienen que tener un sonido envolvente, siempre manejado por el bajo y energético para que sea garantizado que funcionen en la pista de baile. Tambien se puede decir que nos encanta un buen bajón.

No podríamos opinar diferente. Ahora, sabemos que existen varios tipos de software de producción, ustedes cuál usan para producir su música?

Actualmente estamos entre FL Studio y Ableton.

Y eso a qué se debe?

FL Studio (o Fruity Loops) porque cuando empezamos estaba listo y disponible, una amigo nuestro tenia una version "demo", lo calamos y nos gusto asi que le seguimos con ese. Empezamos a usar Ableton ya que gradualmente estamos armando un show en vivo que sera programado en Ableton. Ya lo teníamos ahí asi que empezamos a hacer nuestros "loops" en FL Studio y hacemos las secuencias en Ableton, esto le dio una perspectiva fresca ya que descubrimos nuevos efectos y técnicas disponibles.

Si esto fuera un status de Facebook ya le habríamos dado click a "Me Gusta". Aquí tambien trabajamos con ambos programas. Cuál es el método que toman para empezar un track original o un "remix"?

Para un track original solo es cuestión de sacar una buena idea y hacerla, las buenas ideas pueden salir en cualquier momento asi que uno necesita anotarlas si no esta en el estudio. Y para un remix nomas es cuestión de conseguir las partes y calar un desmadre hasta que algo "groovy" salga ;)

Nice! Ya que andan soltando toda la sopa, qué consejo le pueden dar a artistas que apenas van empezando en esto?

Sean sinceros con ustedes mismos. Sean pacientes. Hagan la musica que aman, no la que crean que va vender más. Sean originales. Sean buenas personas y hagan amigos, no contactos. Sean realistas con sus habilidades y expectativas. Si pueden hacer todas estas cosas entonces tendran un gran comienzo!

Honestamente nos encanto esta respuesta. Siguiendo por buen camino, cuales han sido sus mejores, peores y/o más divertidos momentos en sus carreras como DJs/Productores/Dueños de una disquera?

Wow, esas son muchas preguntas en una! Tocar en el masivo Fuji Rock Festival en Japón, y yo (Rich) al haberme quedado dormido en un concierto y haber despertado en Corea del Sur fue algo monumentalmente divertido y una experiencia muy chistosa. Casi haber sido secuestrados en la ciudad de Juárez fue otro "gran acontecimiento". Escuchar nuestro primer sencillo tocado en DC10 por Luciano 2 veces en hilo fue asombroso, asi como la primera vez que tocamos en la terraza de nuestro club favorito: Space en Ibiza. Ah, es demasiado difícil, hemos tocado mas de 400 veces en 40 paises en los últimos 5 años, hay muchísimas buenas experiencias como para englobar en un solo párrafo!

Creo que me fui muy recio con esa última pregunta! Ahora una fácil.. Tienen una pieza favorita en cuanto a aparatos de producción o programas de producción musical?

FL Studio ha sido algo fundamental desde el principio.

Estamos muy emocionados en regresar a Estados Unidos y Mexico esta proxima semana, luego Brasil en Marzo y Australia en Abril! Ha estado exageradamente helado en el Reino Unido asi que ansiamos un gran esperado verano! En Diciembre nos tomamos un tiempo fuera para enfocarnos en el estudio y nos ha ido muy bien ya que tenemos mucho material nuevo listo para lanzar en los próximos meses,estos incluyen remixes para Channel X, Hugo, Kevin Knapp y Cassette Jam en disqueras como Upon You, Leftroom y Goodvibe.

Nos parece genial que les este iendo tan bien y esperamos con ansias escuchar esos lanzamientos! Para terminar bien, nos pueden contar un buen chiste?

Chiste de Rick:

Dos gringos estan un dia tirándose con una cuerda bungee. El primero le dice al otro:
"Sabes, podriamos hacer mucho dinero creando nuestro negocio de bungee."
El segundo piensa que es una idea genial asi que los dos juntan su dinero y compran todo lo necesario: torre, cuerda elástica, seguros de vida, etc.
Ambos viajan a México y empiezan a construir todo. Mientras construyen la torre la gente empieza a llegar a verlos trabajar. El primero brinca y cuando rebota la cuerda y regresa hasta arriba regresa con algunos cortes y raspones.
Desafortunadamente el otro amigo no pudo atraparlo asi que cae de nuevo, rebota la cuerda y otra vez regresa hasta arriba. Esta vez todo moreteado y sangrando. Su amigo vuelve a fallar en atraparlo asi que vuelve a caer. Cae y cuando regresa ya trae algunos huesos quebrados y esta casi inconsciente. Por suerte su amigo logra atraparlo esta vez y le pregunta:
"Que pasó? Estaba muy larga la cuerda?"
El amigo responde:
"No, la cuerda estaba bien, pero que chingados es una 'Piñata'?!"

Chiste de Jamie:

Anoche vino la policía a mi casa y me ensenan una foto de mi esposa y me preguntan:
"Senor, es esta su esposa?"
Yo contesto:

"Sí"

A lo que ellos responden:
"Parece que la atropelló un autobus.."
Yo digo:
"Ya lo se, pero tiene muy buena personalidad" ;)

ENGLISH VERSION:

Being big Audiojack fans ourselves we couldn't let go the opportunity to have a moment and ask you guys some questions we've been longing since we first heard "Robot"..
First and foremost, how'd you guys started this project?

We sat in the park pondering how we could “make it” as DJs and we had 3 options, have a successful club night, a record label or a music production outfit. As we’d both dabbled in music growing up we decided that was the best option and got to work learning the production software.

Too bad you couldn't "make it" on any of those.. (just kidding!) What a great decision you guys took, and how would you describe your productions?

We try to stand out from the crowd and not get caught up in trends; we do this by including unusual sounds and effects. The tracks always have to sound warm, bass driven and energetic so that they are guaranteed to work on the dance floor. I guess we’re suckers for a good breakdown too.

We couldn't agree more with you. Now, we know there are many kinds of music production software, which one do you use for your productions?

We’re currently sat in the middle of FL Studio and Ableton.

Why?

FL Studio because when we started out it was what was readily available, a friend had a demo and we tried it and liked it so we carried on. Now we’re very proficient in it and will stick with it because maybe it gives us a trademark sound. We’ve started using Ableton as we’re gradually putting together a live show that will be based on Ableton. As it was there we thought of trying to make a track on it so we made our loops in FL Studio and sequenced it in Ableton, it gave a fresh perspective as there were new effects and techniques available.

If we read this on a Facebook status we'd be clicking on "Like" by now. We use both here. What is the approach you take when you start an original track or remix?

For an original track it’s just a case of coming up with a good idea and then getting it down, good ideas can come at any time so you need to note them down if you’re not in the studio. As for a remix it’s getting the parts and trying shit out until something groovy happens ;)

Nice! Now that you're giving us the low down on your success, what advice would you give to artists who are just starting out?

Be true to yourself. Be patient. Make the music you love, not the music that you think will sell you records. Be original. Be a good person and make friends, not contacts. Be realistic in your abilities and expectations. If they can do all these things then they’re off to a great start!

We honestly loved this answer. Following on the "awesomeness" path, which has been the biggest, worst, and/or most fun moments in your career as DJs/Producers/Label Owners?

Wow that’s a lot of questions in one question! Playing the massive Fuji Rock Festival in Japan and me (Rich) falling asleep after the gig then waking up in South Korea was a monumentally fun and funny experience, almost getting kidnapped in Juarez was another experience altogether, hearing our first ever record played in DC10 by Luciano twice in a row was amazing, as was the first time we played on the terrace at our favourite club Space in Ibiza. Ah it’s too difficult, we’ve done over 400 gigs in 40 countries in the last 5 years, there’s just too much good stuff to summarise in one paragraph!

My bad, I think I went over the top with that last question! Now an easy one.. Do you have a favorite piece of gear or software?

FL Studio has been our rock from day one.

It's time to plug like there is no tomorrow, tell us a bit about your upcoming gigs and releases…

We’re really excited to be back in the US and Mexico next weekend, then Brazil in March and Australia in April! It’s been a bitterly cold winter in the UK so we can’t wait for some long overdue sunshine! We took some time off in December to focus on studio time and it’s really paid off as we’ve got lots of new stuff ready for release in the next few months including remixes for Channel X, Hugo, Kevin Knapp and Cassette Jam on labels including Upon You, Leftroom and Goodvibe.

We think it's really awesome that is going really well for you guys and we can't wait to listen to those releases! Last but not least, can you tell us a good joke?

Rich’s Joke:

Two guys are bungee-jumping one day. The first guy says to the second. "You know, we could make a lot of money running our own bungee-jumping service in Mexico." The second guy thinks this is a great idea, so the two pool their money and buy everything they'll need - a tower, an elastic cord, insurance, etc.
They travel to Mexico and begin to set up on the square. As they are constructing the tower, a crowd begins to assemble. Slowly, more and more people gather to watch them at work. The first guy jumps. He bounces at the end of the cord, but when he comes back up, the second guy notices that he has a few cuts and scratches.
Unfortunately, the second guy isn't able catch him, he falls again, bounces and comes back up again. This time, he is bruised and bleeding. Again, the second guy misses him. The first guy falls again and bounces back up. This time, he comes back pretty messed up - he's got a couple of broken bones and is almost unconscious. Luckily, the second guy finally catches him this time and says, "What happened? Was the cord too long?" The first guy says, "No, the cord was fine, but what the fuck is a 'pinata'?"

Jamie’s Joke:

The police came to my door last night holding a picture of my wife. They asked me “Is this your wife sir?”, I answered “Yes” and they replied, “It looks like she has been hit by a bus!”, I said ”I know but she has a lovely personality” ;)
